I went out this am to shot some of the brownfield sites around the Gowanus. One I couldn’t find-153 2nd St. This one is fenced off and inaccessible. I almost gave up but then I realized the fence wasn’t so high and I could hold the camera over the top of it.

Working Waterfront, Past and Present

I walked down the the Gowanus and across the Hamilton Avenue Bridge. I got a different view of Benson Scrap metal. I like this photo because it gives a sense of chaos spiling out of order.

Then I walked thru Red Hook and out Columbia Street. The views of the Brooklyn waterfront were awesome at that time of day. I am including this photo of the grain elevator rather than one that has the Williamsburg Bank Building in the background because the color is better. This is the abandonned waterfront.

Then there is the waterfront as it is being remodeled for commerce and recreation. Ikea lights up these old cranes at night. They look spectacular.

Park Slope

After reviewing my photos, I realized that I almost never photograph Park Slope. Maybe too familiar, too easy, too pretty. So I have been looking a little harder.

Back to Benson Scrap Metal

I went back to photograph the scrap metal facility on the Gowanus this am. This time I noticed that one can see the Golden Arches through the piles. The light was also prettier and the color richer at the earlier hour.

Metal Recycling

Posted in Gowanus Canal by rmichals on the August 13, 2008

This morning I walked down to the Lowe’s and through the parking lot. There is actually a viewing area there that looks right onto this metal recycling facility on the Gowanus Canal. The cranes were operating. It was a fantastic show. This is a spot I would like to shoot at dawn. the cranes wouldn’t be operating but the light would be falling right on the heaps of used metal scraps.
